Every New Yorker knows how to cut short an unsatisfactory date. But what if a date is going so well, you don"t want it to cut it off? At what point should you end it?
When you"re on a roll with someone, it"s easy to move from one activity to another, especially in Manhattan. But does there come a time when you should quit while you"re ahead?
I ask because just as I was convinced that my plan to go on one date a week until Christmas was a waste of time - I met Daniel.
Daniel was given my number by a cool literary agent who is a new pal of mine. She"d dated him in college.
He invited me for a drink in the Biltmore Room - but on the night of our date, a rainy Wednesday, I didn"t really feel in the mood.
I felt even less in the mood when I walked into the bar and an unattractive guy in a bad sweater rushed toward me. I forced a smile, secretly cursing my pal.
But just as I was steeling myself for another night of zero chemistry, the guy in the bad sweater strode right past me. Behind him, I spotted a cute boy with disheveled( 头发凌乱的)dark hair. He was looking my way.
"Oh, please let it be him," I prayed to God. And, for once, it was.
I rushed over and hurled my arms around him, maniacally recounting my near miss. Luckily he was unfazed.
Daniel was my type, tall and scruffy( 破旧的)with dark blue eyes. I soon found out he"d played pro baseball after college, worked as a private investigator, worked for Sotheby"s and was now writing a book. I liked him even more.
We talked and talked - until we noticed the waiters were sweeping up around us. Daniel put me in a cab(出租车) and asked me if I"d have dinner with him that Friday.
Friday came and we went to Odeon, then on to a gigat the Knitting Factory. Then he suggested we go to his local bar, Chelsea Commons.
We had our first kiss at the jukebox, then went back to his place. We woke up late on Saturday, and Daniel asked me to have brunch with him. We went to the Half King for BLTs and Bloody Marys. The weather was gorgeous, so we then strolled around the Chelsea galleries.
Then it began to get dark again. and as we walked down 10th Avenue to his apartment, we both went a little quiet.
Was this the appropriate time to call it quits? I wondered. After all, didn"t most overnight dates end after brunch the following day? And wasn"t there a rule about how it"s always better to leave someone wanting more?
But I was having a great time and had no plans.
As I pondered this, Daniel turned to me and blurted(脱口说出): "I don"t want our date to end yet."
"So let"s do something else," I replied.
We walked to my place so I could change. Then we went to the movies. When the film ended, we went out on to the sidewalk and lingered awkwardly again.
I wondered if I should take off. I was afraid that if I stuck around for too long, he might get claustrophobic.
It seemed that neither of us wanted to suggest another activity in case the date was ruined by one of us turning the other down.
We walked a little. "Gosh, it"s cold," I said.
"Maybe we should have a quick drink to warm up," he replied.
We went to Bottino on 10th Avenue and drank red wine.
By 10 p.m. I wondered if he wanted me to go back to his place again, but was reluctant to ask. Was two nights in a row pushing it?
Finally I took the bull by the horns.(不畏艰险)
"Sooo," I began. "Just out of interest, at what point should one end a date?"
"Well," he replied, "when would you like this one to end?"
"Well," I responded, "when would you?"
We both hesitated.
What if one of us chirped up "tomorrow" as the other was saying "tonight"?
He took a deep breath.
"I would like it to end tomorrow after a late brunch, when you have to go to work," he said.
"Done," I replied.
When I left him on Sunday at 5 p.m. to head off to my news night shift, we had gone for 45 hours straight.
It"s Christmas on Wednesday - Daniel came just in the nick of time.( 恰好)
