Why Supply Chain Management?
With the globalization of markets, stiffer competition, new technologies and demanding customers, supply chain management has become the rallying cry of business leaders from around the globe. Why? Because effective supply chain management lets you deliver products and services cheaper, faster, and better. In today's marketplace, you must have that competitive edge to survive and grow.

Why China?

China's supply and logistics market is arguably the largest market in the world. Translated into any language, this means tremendous opportunity for your company.

With accession to the WTO, China's business with the world will expand dramatically. China's foreign trade grew by 16% just in the January-February, 2001 timeframe. Imports and exports from the US and European Union are up considerably, as are those from other Southeast Asian nations.

China has one of the largest Internet and e-commerce markets in the world. As of December 31, 2000, there were 22.5 million internet users in China. Expenditures in the IT and E-Commerce space is expected to reach 15 billion dollars by the end of 2002. With this growth in e-commerce comes huge opportunities. Foreign logistics firms are already establishing factories and subsidiaries in China, grabbing market share.

With 1.3 billion potential customers, there is tremendous movement by multinationals to invest and do business in China. The US China Bilateral Trade Agreements will only increase foreign ownership, including investment in China's transportation, logistics and distribution sectors.

To implement these new trade opportunities, to attract foreign investment and technology and to remain competitive in the global marketplace, China must quickly upgrade it's distribution, logistics, and software systems. However, China's current supply chain industry is highly underdeveloped and fragmented with major bottlenecks in Transportation, Distribution, Logistics, Warehousing, Material Handling, Cargo/Port Handling Facilities and Information Technology Systems. China is aware of these challenges and is acting on them. Logistics and Distribution will be a priority in the service industry for the country's 10th five year plan between 2001 and 2005. At a recent international conference, Ding Junfa, Deputy Director of State Internal Trade said, "Foreign investment in the logistics sector is encouraged, especially in the West." He also said that use of e-commerce could slash business costs on average 40% but that it would not happen "without support from a mature logistics industry." (Journal of Commerce).
